Artist Bio
Nicholas Coleman was born in Provo, Utah. Brought up in an artistic environment, Nicholas has been painting and drawing for as long as he can remember. He has traveled extensively through North America, Africa, New Zealand and Europe. Nicholas Coleman has found much of his inspiration in his travels, hunting and fishing along the way. Winslow Homer, Bruno Liljefors, Carl Rungius have all been influential to Coleman’s work as well as John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn and especially the western work of Frank Tenney Johnson, Philip R. Goodwin, and especially his father, Michael Coleman. Nicholas uses a traditional academic approach in his painting, using gouache and oil.
His work definitely has a feel of realism but there is also a certain amount of spontaneity and a slight impressionistic feel to his paintings that let the viewer participate in the work. Coleman endeavors to create a connection between his paintings and the observer by invoking a mood that the viewer can almost visually walk into, creating a beautiful, serene and almost restful place for both the eyes and soul.
Nicholas has a B.A. in Fine Arts from Brigham Young University . He and his paintings has been featured in national art publications such as Western Art Collector magazine and his work can also be found in several museum installations, including Anshutz Collection in Denver CO, Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, VT, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, WI. Other distinctions include the 2003 & 2006 Award of Merit from the Bennington Center of the Arts, “Art of the Animal Kingtom”, the 2003 Top 100 Arts for the Parks.
